Paper written for Professor James D. Hart's English 250 class, based on a letter, June 20, 1866, from J. Ross Browne to James A. Garfield, in the Library of Congress. Includes a copy of the letter, which transmitted some bottles of California wine, on behalf of the California wine producers, to protest a tax on alcohol; and a commentary on Browne's connection with California, his association with Agoston Haraszthy and the organization of the California Wine Growers Association. Footnotes, bibliography and a copy of a letter, Apr. 15, 1866, to B.D. Wilson, the the Huntington Library, also included.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831.
